Champaka
This is for My Utterances and Namita Sachan
The Flowers speak a silent language. A flower has a ability to make each one of us happy and when ever we glimpse it we smile from out heart. It is an image of perfect innocence. Poets and seers, writers, and painters all have found inspiration from these exquisite creations of God. The color the texture, the hues, the fragrance gives you an elusive glimpse of the perfect perfection of that omnipotent force which created this amazing Universe.
These beautiful lines are from the pen of Mahadevi Verma from her poem Phool
And more from the same poem
Mother mine, to the wild forest I am going,
Where upon the champa boughs the champa buds are blowing;
To the ksil-haunted river-isles where lotus lilies glisten,
The voices of the fairy folk are calling me: O listen1 ---Sarojini Naidu, The Golden Threshold
Champa known as Champaka evokes mixed feelings. It has a delicate fragrance. The white Champa is the most common Champa flower seen almost all over India. There are more exotic varieties like the Rakt Champa , the Nag Champa and the Son Champa.
I have been fascinated with these flowers since childhood and one memory I remember is standing under a tree laden with flowers in front of an ancient temple on the Bangalore Mysore highway. The sky was laden with dark clouds and the threatening rains made the atmosphere electric. As the rains poured we were covered with a shower of these white yellow gold flowers. It made me happy in a very strange way almost mystical. That evening, those flowers, the rain drops are cherished in the heart. It was like blessings from the Almighty.
Here are some very beautiful lines from Dinkar’s poem “Balika se Vadhu” These lines have lovely description of flowers though there is no mention of the Champa flower.

Hello Nupur,
Beautiful! I loved that childhood memory of standing under the cloudy sky and that champa tree. Almost divine, like Vrindavan. I have a similar memory but for the parijat flowers. Son champa is such a lovely flower na? Frangipani looks beautiful but the smells are a little unusual.
